David Hamilton Recent Sculpture
Artefacts from another time.
Hamilton’s new work involves the casting and assembly of sculptures that are like familiar hand-held tools or weaponry. Materials are manipulated to produce artifact like objects that use the technique of tromp l'oeil to mask and shift our perception of materials and accepted time sequences. Sometimes the forms resemble post-apocalyptic relics that juxtapose materials with particular time signatures, so that traditional bronze and the illusion of stone printed onto aluminium may find itself alongside more contemporary materials such as polished metals and paints.
As part of the sculpture’s intent many of the works are presented to the viewer for closer scrutiny using presentation techniques similar to that used in museums for the display of precious cultural artifacts. Also included are preliminary drawings from his sketchbook.
