'Far Away'
An exhibition of drawings and paintings by
KATH SINKORA
All
of life’s journeys incorporate actions and events that, with time and
perspective, reveal a tangled mesh of beginnings, processes and endings.
Significant events shape and mould us, often compelling a response where
reflection urges a reconfiguring of personal history into a landscape of
possibilities.
My
art is derived from a childhood spent in a prison-like 19th century
neo-Gothic institution. From the age of three my nights were spent looking
through windows covered with bars and wrought iron, achingly staring at the
landscape over open fields, and across the Yarra River in Melbourne. An
occasional and privileged visit to a restricted access and meticulously
designed and cultivated garden afforded the only release into an otherwise
barred and concrete-encased existence.
The
landscape became a repository of seemingly impossible dreams: beyond the barred
windows, barbed wire and high walls topped with broken glass, were views of the
landscape which held promises of life in open spaces with alluring horizons
tempting me to escape as far away as possible. The call of the distance is
never far away.
Each
work I create resonates some aspect of my heavily regimented and highly restricted
upbringing. Visual blocks, bars or divisions and occasional references to 19th
century wrought iron often form a linear or ‘filmic’ structure in my work alluding
to the taming of nature.
