RYLLTON VINEY
ARTIST STATEMENT
“The works in this exhibition explore ways to represent my longstanding interest in ancient sites and, in particular, standing stones, hilltop earthworks, trackways and leylines, stone circles, passage graves and long barrows and other earth displacements in England ,Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
My approach to painting, drawing and printmaking is marked by a restricted palette often close to monochromatic, a working method of building up and taking away and a deliberate weathered appearance to suggest both natural erosion and the evidence of man-made tracks, mark stones, barrows and other forms of earth displacement .
So, each work is a sort of foray, quarrying into pictorial space suggesting a layering of time and experience through natural and/or man altered conditions. Thus, the work is very much an unhindered responsiveness to place .
For some of the titles I have used quotes from Adam Thorpe’s ULVERTON which could be described as a poetic meditation on British history and the nature of time.”
