On Reflection

HUGH McLACHLAN

ARTIST STATEMENT

Making designer jewellery is like making sculpture in miniature and Hugh has found that his physical environment and the years of transforming complex three-dimensional forms into wearable pieces of jewellery has had a big impact on the way he approaches sculpture. The polished surface is increasingly becoming an important element – marine grade stainless steel highly polished to a mirror finish. The polished surface has been defined and refined through his background as a silversmith and jeweller over a period of thirty years. Hugh's sculpture with it’s polished surface has the ability to contain form and create space at the same time through the illusion of the reflected surface and explores how light plays with our perception of the world through reflection, distortion and the way we see ourselves in this illusion of a new environment.

Artwork from this exhibition is no longer available to purchase.
