TASMANIAN LANDSCAPES
JOHN GILL
This selection of paintings of Tasmanian landscapes are taken from places I have visited around the state recently and that drew my attention. While travelling, I take photographs of scenes that interest me, at various locations; from around Launceston to Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair to the Gordon River. I then work from these photographs to bring them to life on canvas. I have exclusively used palette knife with oil on canvas, and occasionally oil and beeswax on canvas. My interest is drawn to the different lightings and moods of the Tasmanian landscape, and I feel that I can create a reflection of these ideas in my paintings using a palette knife, where I can put down my vision in paint more closely and faster than brush.
