 The Celestials

MANDY HUNNIFORD

After many years of pushing the boundaries of what the Tasmanian landscape looked like, Mandy now asks these questions. How do we fit in this land? What are our stories? What secrets do the towns hold? Her aim is to delve deeper into the beautiful and contested landscape of Tasmania and into the complex histories of its towns and communities.

This exhibition is a historical narrative that interprets the Chinese history surrounding the North East and Launceston. The Chinese community, or the ‘Celestials’ as they were known, were amongst some of the first pioneers to settle in the North- East. This exhibition acknowledges these people, connections, events and cultural heritage, all set within the Tasmanian landscape.
